/* Superscript*/

I’m Julie Artz, book coach for writers of truth-telling, status-quo-smashing stories that matter.

My mission is to empower writers like you to slay your doubt demons and learn how to get your novels and memoirs reader-ready.

If you dream of a life spent telling world-changing stories, I can help you get your stories into the hands of the readers who need them.

LET'S GET STARTED

My amazing clients' books

My amazing clients' books

Have you ever been silenced, told your story wasn't true or didn't matter

(even if just by the doubt demons in your own head)?

I see you. I get you. I am you.

“That never happened.” The last thing an aspiring memoirist wants to hear. The last thing a young adult wants to hear from her parents when recounting a formative experience.

The thing I heard the first time I shared a short memoir piece with my family over twenty years ago…

I had just gotten out of grad school and written a 1500 word memoir piece about a poignant event that happened to me as a kid.

Proud of my work, I sent it to my parents and brother who simply responded with “that didn’t happen.”

I don’t even think those three little words were said in some nefarious plot to silence me. I wasn’t censored, threatened with disinheritance, shunned.  I doubt they even remember they said it.

(Though I do think they were uncomfortable with the idea of me shining a light at some cracks in the perfect facade of our family)

But it was a big enough shock that I didn’t do any more personal writing for twenty three more years…

While this was a very painful occurrence, it was also a galvanizing one.

The reason I’m so fierce about my work now is because it took me far too long to give myself permission to tell my stories.

At first I switched to fiction, thinking that making up stories would be easier than telling “the truth” in nonfiction.

But here’s the thing:

I just kept writing the same truths over and over again with different characters and in different story worlds.

Ultimately, I had to just recommit to telling my truth through story; to acknowledging the pain of the past and giving myself permission to write for no one else but myself.

It took almost a decade, but I’m so glad I did the work.

And now, I’m here to be your book coach so that it doesn’t have to take you quite so long.

This is my heroine's origin story. The reason I write. The reason I work with writers to help them get their stories out into the world. The reason I get all kinds of fired up about gaslighting, misogyny, racism, violence, bigotry, and injustice. The reason I’m constantly trying to subvert the power structures that try to keep us quiet and obedient.

There are so many systems in place in this world that try to silence us.

Especially if we are too sensitive, too talkative, too liberal, too weird, too crazy, too fat, too thin, too queer, too female, too WHATEVER for the comfort of those grasping, white-knuckled, at a fracturing status quo.

My values will always be at the heart of my work:

Climate change is real and no human is illegal. Love is love, women’s and trans rights are human rights, and Black Lives Matter. Children deserve diverse books.

I devote my attention and my intention as an author, editor, and book coach to creating, promoting, and publishing books that reflect these values.

Because stories change lives.

If all of that doesn't make you say "hell yeah!" I'm probably not the book coach for you.

If you’ve been silenced...

Or if you...

✦  have something to say, but you’re scared of the fallout.

have been gaslighted into thinking your truth isn’t real.

have tried before, and you just couldn’t do it.

✦ know the truth and you want to share it with others.

✦ understand the power of story to tell the truth, to shine a light, to change the world…

Do it. Speak the words. Tell your truth.

The world will always try to break our hearts. To keep us silent and obedient and tame. To maintain the order, the compliance, that’s required to maintain the status quo.

Don’t let them.

I’m here to support you every step of the way of getting your stories into the hands of readers who need them.

There's nothing better in the life of a book coach than witnessing a hard-fought client win, one that truly changes the author’s life - and the world.

Suzette Mullen, The Only Way Through is Out

In February 2024, my client (and now-friend), Suzette Mullen celebrated the release of her heart-wrenching, vulnerable, empowering memoir, The Only Way Through is Out, about her poignant coming-out story.

Lambda Literary Review named it one of the most anticipated titles of February 2024 and Foreword Reviews called it "Candid, inspirational. . . . An emotive memoir that issues a stirring call to women to choose self-actualization."

Despite this incredible publishing success, you might be surprised to hear that Suzette almost gave up on this story.

When her first round of submissions didn't get the response she'd hoped for after she planned her draft with me as her book coach, she circled back to me for help with her query.

What we found was not a query issue, but a story-level issue that would require another deep revision to fix.

And after multiple years and multiple rounds of revisions, Suzette wasn't sure she had it in her.

Often the thing that separates successful writers from the hopefuls is just being brave enough to dig in one more time.

I can help you be brave by holding the heart of your story for you as you wade through revisions.

Learn more about our journey together in this interview or this chat Suzette and I recorded the week before her book came out.

Suzette’s story of coming out as a lesbian later in life matters. To her. To readers. To those who are struggling to face a similar decision.

I’m so glad she didn’t give up before her story was truly reader-ready.

And I hope you won’t either.

I know what it’s like to be silenced, to be different, to be “weird”...and how to reclaim that as your superpower!

I was that kid who spent her young life sneaking into wardrobes searching for Narnia.

In case that alone wasn’t enough to convince you of my odd-ball status, my first storytelling experience involved sock puppets and a long meandering story about a mean wolf attacking a couple of sweet song birds in the second grade talent contest.

Yep, I was super popular and well liked.

It used to make me feel so lonely, so wrong, so “other,” when people called me or my stories or my ideas weird (which naturally just made me retreat further into the fantasy worlds I found in books).

People still tell me I’m weird all the time (just ask my kids!).

These days, I just thank them, because what they don’t know is that Weird is my superpower, my inner source of strength. And it can be yours too.

Are you wyrd, too?

Wyrd (pronounced “weird”) means fate or destiny in Germanic traditions and is the rune that represents Yggdrasil, the world tree, in Norse mythology.

As someone who has been told I was “too weird” pretty much all my life, this alternate, expansive understanding of what “weirdness” could mean thrills me.

If you set out each day to change the world with your stories, but worry you or your stories are too weird, I want to know you. I want to read them. I’m wyrd too.

Let’s embrace it and work together. I can help you slay those doubt demons so that you can send your work out into the world with confidence.

Over the past 10+ years, I’ve built a thriving book coaching business based on my values, my editing chops, and my deep knowledge of the craft and the publishing industry.

✦  I’m honored to have worked with hundreds of writers since I first started freelancing in 2013.

Jane turned her nebulous idea into a Big 5 published book!

“I owe Julie an enormous thanks. She was my coach at the very onset of a bouncing baby idea, and she held my hand for almost two years as I brought it into the world. She set me on a straighter path for this nebulous middle-grade novel idea I had and steered me away from blind alleys. Not all of them of course – because, well, I’m blinkered and stubborn – but without her I would have needed dozens more rewrites. She pushed me, gently, to look for and eventually find the truth of the story I wanted to tell but couldn’t yet articulate.

She asked me all the hard questions. When my answers were trite or knee-jerk or just not deep or meaty enough to merit a novel, she called me on it. In a nice way, of course (wink). Once we were finished, I had a toolbox that was filled with strategies and ways forward. Having her as a coach from the start was invaluable.

A few fun facts about me

♒️ Aquarius, an Enneagram 8, a Projector (Human Design), and an ENFP in Myers-Briggs - I bring big energy to everything I do.

🎼 I sing in a women’s choir and go through life imagining I’m on stage as the lead from my favorite musical (currently Persephone from Hadestown).

✈️ I'm a travel nut who has lived in France, England, and Finland, in addition to various states across the US.

👩‍🌾 Although it didn’t last long, I tried to quit writing in 2020 to become an urban farmer. Read more about how I wrote myself back into the light on Substack.

🍝 In addition to my flower obsession, I also love cycling, hiking, and all things food and wine.

💞 I married my college sweetheart after wishing it into being on the Bronze Boar of Florence's fabled nose, so I’m definitely a romantic at heart!

🌳 A consummate social and environmental justice minded story geek, I live in an enchanted forest outside of Redmond, Washington, with my husband, two strong-willed teenagers (when they’re not off at university!), and two naughty furry familiars.
